The sociology department of Wuhan University has a long history. In the early 1920s, Wuhan university has opened professional courses in sociology and set up the major of sociology. Many prominent Chinese sociologists such as professor Li Da and professor Li Hanjun taught in Wuhan University. Since 1979, Wuhan University has become one of the ten national universities which restored the teaching of sociology firstly and reconstructed sociology major. In October 2005, sociology department became the independent department of the school and entered a rapid development track.

The department of sociology have a first-class faculty, now has 27 teachers, including 7 professors (7 doctoral supervisors), 9 associate professors and 11 lecturers.

Now department of sociology has two undergraduate majors about sociology and social work, four master degree programs about sociology, anthropology, folklore and social work, and a sociology doctor degree program. Sociology is a key discipline of Hubei province.

The teacher's scientific research strength is abundant; the research results are outstanding. In recent years, more than 300 academic papers were published in the Journal of the provincial level, and more than 30 academic books were published. And published a number of academic papers in Social Sciences in China, Sociological Studies, Ethno-national Studies, China's Population Science, Social Science Abroad, Xinhua Digest, People's Daily theory, Guangming Daily and other important academic journals. Presided over the National Social Science Fund Programs and the Ministry of Education Humanities and social science fund programs a total of 18, in the study of funds amounted to more than 2 million yuan. Presided over the programs of enterprises and institutions and the European Union and other international cooperation programs of more than 40, total expenditure amounted to about 5 million yuan. More than 10 academic achievements by the provincial and ministerial Award for outstanding achievements in Humanities and social sciences. Advisory report was approved by the party and state leaders and the adoption of enterprises and institutions.

In the field of educational sociology research, life quality research, ethnic studies, folk culture and modernization, social thought and social development, social psychology, social policy research and so on. On this basis, the establishment of the Institute of sociology, social development institute, Institute of life quality, life quality research center, social culture research center, intangible cultural heritage research center, women's research center and other research institutions.

International academic exchanges are active. The sociology department has established stable relationships to do academic exchanges or cooperation in running schools with more than 20 academic institutions and educational entities including the United States, Canada, European Union, Japan, Australia, Hong Kong and Taiwan. The department established the base for teaching and scientific research in Shenzhen, Yunnan, Yichang, Edong and Wuhan.
